We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Principal Engineer.

Brief on Principal Engineer, DPT

Group Data Technology (GDT) enables the bank to democratize and commercialize the bank’s data via world-class technologies and engineering capabilities. We partner with business and technology teams to contribute towards HSBC’s Data and Technology Strategy, and ultimately deliver world-class banking services to our customers. Data Provisioning Technologies is a global department within Group Data Technology (GDT) and has teams around the globe supporting Big Data, Data Ingestion, Data Transformation and Data Distribution solutions globally across all global business and functions. The organization is rapidly transforming both its people structure and ways of working to better align with our vision for Data as an asset, and therefore the need to increase the speed and quality of delivery. We continue to mature DevOps model driving agile delivery and building a strong product ownership group. We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join Data Provisioning Technology team.

Role purpose:

The Principal Engineer will report directly to the Head of Data Provisioning Technology and play a crucial role in advancing engineering practices and leadership within our engineering community. This position is focused on building top-tier open data platform architecture and requires a hands-on engineer with practical experience in developing services and technical architecture for data provisioning solutions.

In this role, you will lead by example, collaborating closely with other developers through various communication channels, including emails, meetings, blogs, videos, and talks. You will support our multi-year initiatives aimed at modernizing technology, redefining ways of working, minimizing engineering friction, and fostering empowered, autonomous teams. Key responsibilities include contributing to our future state architecture and developing a comprehensive technology strategy and roadmap for data provisioning capabilities. Your leadership will be instrumental in delivering on our business partners' requirements while driving innovation and excellence in our engineering practices.

Principal responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across the end-to-end delivery and run lifecycle, utilizing their skills and expertise to carry out engineering, testing and operational support activities.
• Accountability for engineering Data product or service, identifying and developing the most appropriate Technology solutions.
• Liaise with other engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to understand and drive the product or service’s direction.
• Establish a digital environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high quality platform solutions.
• Lead DevOps initiatives across DPT, provide support to engineering teams working at all stages of a product or service release/change with a strong customer focus and end to end journeys.
• Driving software development quality as a key leading engineering standard across DPT functions.
• Defining and improve practices.
• Work with the Engineering Practice to promote development of engineers through coaching, and mentoring.
• Providing oversight of engineering against technical principles and strategy.
• Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. that are applicable.
• Promote innovation and adoption of cutting-edge specialist technologies and practices with the domain and across HSBC.
• Identify as an authority for specific engineering disciplines providing steer/assistance to programmes or projects that require it.
  
  

Requirements

Requirements:

• Hands on engineer and able to work in production environments.
• 10+ years of experience in developing and implementing software solutions.
• Technical skills and experience around Data products and platforms.
• Knowledge of DevOps and ability to drive DevOps strategy alongside driving engineering culture, focus on developing engineering solutions.
• Container experience and experience either in GCP / AWS / Azure
• Hands on experience in both front end and back-end development / databases
• Gravitas and ability to interact with and advise senior executives.
• Experience in working in an agile environment with a strong focus on developing engineering solutions.
• Proven ability to improve developer productivity – through automation, reusability, and advanced technical skills.
• Strong leadership skills, team-builder, and influencer.
• Exposure and success working within a global matrix organization model.
• Proven track record in developing, managing, and implementing effective stakeholder management strategies.
• Ability to think laterally and innovatively and find creative solutions, with a proactive approach to problem solving and delivery and understand business issues and devise solutions that deliver results, constructing innovative approaches where required.
• Able to work within an ambiguous environment, prioritize and reconcile competing demands and resolve complex issues.
• Great attention to detail and an ability to identify and manage risk.
